On Deck // Remember Me

Remember Me is a game that came out back in June of 2013. It’s wild to think it was ten years ago at this point. The game was developed by Don’t Nod. Don’t Nod’s reputation didn’t really get big until their Choose Your Own Adventure-style game Life is Strange came out. Seems to have dwindled over the years again, but they do have a new game I am looking forward to called Banishers coming out next year I believe.

Anyways, Remember Me is set in a cyberpunk dystopian future. Not super original in the year 2023, but ten years ago it definitely felt like a relatively new concept. Not that it was the first of its kind, but it didn’t feel like cyberpunk was everywhere like it does now.

You play as Nilin, a female memory hunter. In the future, remembering memories and being able to share them with others is a very real thing. A memory hunter is skilled enough to dive into other people’s memories and steal information from them. Nilin is one of a kind though. She’s able to remix their memories, changing their perspective on a situation, and even making it so they think a loved one is dead. It’s pretty twisted if you ask me. But hey, it’s the future, people gotta eat.

Remember Me has been a game in my backlog for years. I’ve owned the 360 physical copy of it for an exceptionally long time. In fact, I have an insane amount of old 360 games I still haven’t played. I’ve just been pretty lazy about setting up that console. And I keep buying new games like a clown. This and The Last of Us also came out at the same time, and just entirely overshadowed this game for everyone.

I saw Remember Me was actually on Steam, and since I’ve been a huge fan of my Steam Deck since I got it, I decided to see how it ran on it. It actually runs incredibly well at just the base settings. I had absolutely no issues at all with it. The only thing that Steam has it knocked for not being a full-on verified Deck game is that sometimes the text is a bit too small. Which I don’t entirely disagree with this. I have terrible eyes, but even so, I had no real issues with being able to read anything.

The game runs smoothly, looks beautiful on the Deck, and with it being a decent combo fighting style game, feels comfortable to play for a good period of time.

I played Remember Me entirely on the Deck and finished it in around 10 hours. I wasn’t looking for achievements or hunting for collectibles, so I played it on the easy setting. I really just wanted to experience the story after all these years of hearing how pretty solid it is.

I actually read up on a potential sequel to Remember Me after completing the game. Sounds like they had the concept of a sequel as well as the story ready to get green-lit by the studio, but after Dont Nod had huge success with Life is Strange, it seems like a sequel was ultimately left in Limbo. I really think a sequel to this game would be incredible. Imagine everything that the Dont Nod studio has learned up to this point. And it’s not like they’re averse to going back to these action-adventure roots. They have a new game The Banishers coming out next year that looks rad as hell.

To wrap this all up, go play Remember Me. Buy it on Steam, and play it on your Steam Deck if you have one. It runs very well and it’s pretty fun. Maybe if we get enough of a spotlight on it, Dont Nod will try and bring back the IP.
