We open up with John running. He just killed someone within the safe haven of The Continental Hotel and is about to become excommunicated. This is a big deal. He ends up with a $14 million bounty on his head. His time is up, and of course every contract assassin in New York is on his ass. Here we are shown the stuff that makes John Wick so entertaining to watch. The action scenes are a lot of fun to watch, as always, but man does the CGI really show and it does not look good at all. Watching an assassin getting donkey kicked by a horse looks fucking terrible. And what’s worse is that they do it twice, and it looks even worse the second time. I literally shook my head. The whole thing seemed like a way to give a little bit of comedic relief to an otherwise gruesome scene, but it just looked so glaringly fake that the whole scene sucked.
There is also an amazing knife scene that takes place in a museum, and it looks bad ass. But you don’t even have to look closely to see how bad the knives that are stuck into some bad guys look. they look almost floaty. I feel like I am being nit picky on all this but these were the two times that I can recall that where the scenes were diminished or completely ruined.
There is also a fight scene getting closer towards the end of the movie. John begins fighting two bad ass assassin’s in a big glass room. There are a bunch of glass cases with what look like glass replicas of skulls inside them. These assassin’s are beating the shit out of John, and just lazily kicking or pushing John into these glass cases. The problem with this is that the cases literally explode when John touches them. They do not act like regular glass at all. It’s so weird, and they do it with 5 or 6 cases. My girlfriend even leaned over to me and whispered “glass doesn’t shatter like that.” Like, yeah, I know, and it looks bad.
Spoilers for the very end of the movie. Don’t keep reading if you don’t want to know.
Close to the ending of the movie, John falls off the top of The Continental Hotel. This is several stories tall, and on the way down he slams into multiple things like a fire escape ladder. This is another spot in the movie where the CGI looks fucking terrible, but besides that, John isn’t dead. He survives this gruesome fall and is ready to start war on the people pulling all the strings. It just feels like it’s leaving that realism behind.
Don’t get me wrong, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is an amazing action movie. In my opinion though, it seems like they went a little too far into what reminds me of ‘Kill Bill’ style stuff. Maybe not as dramatic, but definitely taking some notes out of that action movie.
What made me really like John Wick is how realistic it felt. The fighting felt heavy and deliberate. Amazing choreography, but never over the top. Parabellum seems to lose some of that for me, so I would say in terms of quality, 3 is the weakest of the trilogy. The story is great, the expanding on the lore is beyond interesting, and Halle Barry makes a great supporting actor in the movie. I can’t wait for Chapter 4 to come out and to probably see John’s story get wrapped up in a nice little bow.
