Epic Games Publishing Partnerships – TTO Take

Epic Games just announced a new initiative to start publishing more video games. This announcement also included the three studios that they are currently partnering up with: Remedy Entertainment (Control,Alan Wake), Playdead (Limbo, Inside), and Gen Design (Shadow of the Colussus, Ico).

“[Gen Design], Remedy, and Playdead are among the most innovative and talented studios in the industry, with strong visions for their next games,” said Hector Sanchez, Head of Epic Games Publishing, in a press release. “They will have full creative control, while Epic will provide a solid foundation of project funding and services.”

The game developers, according to Epic, will retain 100% of their intellectual property and complete creative control of their work. They will also get a 50/50 split on all profits and Epic will cover up to 1005 of development costs. This includes salaries, QA, localization, marketing, publishing costs, and more.

TTO Take: This is fucking wild. I know a lot of PC gamers absolutely hate Epic Games for their whole store exclusives thing, but Epic really is changing how this whole publishing game works. A 5-/50 split on profits is huge and all the benefits that these game developers are getting are amazing.

I don’t know if these games will be exclusive to the Epic store, but I can’t imagine you’ll see these new games on Steam day one. Since I am a console guy, I would hope they would be day one on those.

Like it, hate it, whatever. You have to admit that Epic is definitely working harder to give indie game studios a real shot at getting their games out there and getting to really go after that dream game they’ve been wanting to make.
