I am finally getting around to writing my final thoughts on Dead Space 3. I think I was putting it off for a little while because I really didn’t want to let the Dead Space franchise go. I’ve been running with these games and taking my time with them for a few years now. It’s just really weird to finalize the trilogy. I know I have the chance to go and play the remake that was released a little while ago. But knowing that there probably won’t be another remake for 2 or 3 makes it hard for me to play it now. Without further ado, let’s get into this review.

Dead Space 3 is definitely a departure to the previous games. This time, Isaac Clark has been in hiding for quite some time. The visions and everything to do with the Marker has affected him so much. His and Ellie’s relationship has fallen apart and they are no longer together. Things have definitely heated up since the ending of Dead Space 2. The cultists seem to be running things out in the open now. A coup has been staged and it just throws you right into the story. There’s a time jump here that doesn’t feel all that organic, if I am being honest. Felt a little jarring.
Action seems to take a bigger forefront in this game. Out the gate we have fire fights against other humans. Ducking behind cover, firing back at them. It’s definitely new. It doesn’t feel out of place though, considering what is happening in the story. It’s just so different from the atmosphere of the previous games.

After Isaac escapes the first planet he is on, he’s on a mission with a some military douche bag and the character that a co op partner can play. Do their names matter? Not even remotely. The mission? Find Ellie. Apparently she got stuck somewhere in space when looking for the Marker home world or something along those lines. The story isn’t the strongest asset here, let’s be real.
Something that I did enjoy with Dead Space 3 was the change in scenery pretty consistently throughout the game. Of course we have the dark, desolate areas of an abandoned space ship. But being able to maneuver around outside the ship, searching through the wreckage of another. It gave a sense of more freedom to explore, even if there really wasn’t much to see. Then moving on to the winter planet below them, and adding in a new heating mechanic. It was cool, even if it did feel pretty short lived.

Speaking of new mechanics, weapons get changed up. Now you can create your own weapon. Essentially making a weapon that can shoot flames as well as shoot mines. Or the iconic Plasma Cutter mixed with an extremely powerful hand cannon. It shakes things up a bit, gives a little more to do in fighting aliens and humans alike. Upgrading weapons and your suits are essentially the same. It’s more streamlined now though, and you just level up like you would in other RPG style games.
Dead Space 3 was definitely wrapping up Isaac’s story. I have a feeling that the universe of Dead Space was suppose to continue after this game. Almost like how Gears of War upgraded their aliens, it seems like Dead Space could have done the same thing. I would have really liked to see what was next for the franchise. It is a bummer to hear that the Remake of Dead Space did not perform as well as they would of liked. I’m not sure when I will get around to playing the remake now, it at all. I would really like to see more for this franchise though. Even if Isaac Clark is no longer the main protagonist.

Overall, I really enjoyed Dead SPace 3. The story was more off the rails than the previous games. It seemed like this was the last chance they had to wrap the story up. So almost rushed in a sense. I know a lot of people didn’t like the switch up of horror to third person shooter. But I still enjoyed it. There were still tense moments in the game. Dark hallways, surprise attacks. Sure, it’s no where near Dead Space 2 in terms of being scary, but still had it’s moments.
Definitely recommend playing through this franchise. Even has someone who started playing the first one and could not do horror games very easily, I loved it. Worth playing through, and maybe one day we will see a Dead Space 4.
