I just recently started getting back into reading books consistently. In 2022 I read over 15 books, but when this new year rolled around, it took me a while to pick some new up.
At this point though, I’ve read 3 books! This seems like such a small number, which is it for me, but two of them were physical books, limiting the time I get to sit and read. The other was a Kindle book, so I was able to read quite a bit while on the go.
I’m not a professional video game reviewer, and I’m even further away from being a professional book reviewer. Still, I figured to make this singular post that’ll document all the books I have read for 2023 and give short reviews on each of them. I’ll just keep updating this post with each new book review and keep it stuck to the top of the site. Great way to keep track of my reading progress, and maybe get some excellent suggestions from anyone who ends up reading this post!
Star Wars: Jedi Battle Scars by Sam Maggs

Before I wanted to play the new Star Wars Jedi Survivor game, I really wanted to read this book. I’m really glad I did because it gives a really good backdrop to what happened with the Mantis crew and why they’re no longer together in the new game. I really liked how easy this story was to read, and also how easily I could picture all of the characters old and new. It’s a pretty wild ride from start to finish and it really feels like a great bridge to the events of the sequel game. Now, I haven’t beaten the sequel game yet. Seems like it fell into the pit of my backlog, but I will get back to it in the future, I know it!
Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty

Six Wakes is a story that asks “What if clones were commonplace?” In this sci-fi adventure, there is a crew of six people who are all clones. They are taking a trip across the stars in space to deliver some really important and rich people onto a new planet to colonize it. All those important people are in a deep sleep stasis, while the crew are awake for many many years together. What happens when someone’s mind seems to break? Well, murder of course! Except no one knows who the murderer is. The clones wake up in their new bodies and come out to a gruesome scene of blood and bodies with no memories of the last 30+ years. The mystery has begun, will they find the killer, or will history repeat itself?
Six Wakes was such an incredible read. I read through it pretty quickly and loved every second of it. The mystery is wild and just gets crazier as the pages turn. Everything is connected, everyone has something to hide, and it’s so much fun to see all the perspectives of the characters. Definitely give this book a chance!
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

I’m sure if you like sci-fi stories Project Hail Mary has popped up as a recommended book. It’s written by the same author who did The Martian, which I actually have never read. Oops. Anyways, Project Hail Mary is about Earth’s last chance at survival. The planet is heating up and Earth’s brightest people are sending out a Hail Mary attempt to find out a way to fix the problem. It took me a little bit to get into it. There are some moments in the story where it feels like a lot of math is just kind of thrown at the reader. It feels kind of pointless for me? I’m also terrible at math, so I kind of glazed over it. When the twist happens in this story though, it gets really exciting. I loved reading through this book, it was a ton of fun!
I’m not sure if I will finish any other books this year that I would be interested in writing a little bit about, but we will see! I’ll keep this stuck to the top of the blog until next year when I will create a new one. I was doing pretty great this year in reading but fell off when life got in the way. I have a ton of stories on my kindle that are ready to go, so hopefully I can enjoy those soon!
