PlayStation’s State of Play June 2nd – Thoughts

Hey everyone! It’s been a bit, but I figured yesterday’s State of Play had some pretty cool announcements and I thought I would share my thoughts on some of those. So let’s dig in!

There are a few things I would like to give short thoughts on and get them out of the way before I get into the things I am actually looking forward to. Resident Evil 4 Remake and the Village VR update are excellent, and probably stuff people have been looking forward to learning more about. Still, I don’t have a significant opinion of them. Resident Evil is a super popular franchise and I hope the fans get what they want, but I’ve never really got into them so I’ll just leave it at that.

Insomniac’s Spider-Man game coming to PC is fantastic. Exclusive titles will always be a thing for Xbox and PlayStation, it’s just how it works, but having those exclusives eventually move over to PC after a stint on consoles is such a smart move. They’ll realistically have a ton of gamers double-dipping, but also get those games to a brand new audience that exclusively plays on PC. It even sounds like Returnal and Sack Boys Adventure will eventually make the jump to PC as well. It almost makes someone want to play PC gaming more, except it can be a giant pain in the ass and hackers are significantly more prevalent there. Still, great news, PC gamers rejoice!

Street Fighter 6 has such a dope ass vibe, I love it. I am absolute trash when it comes to fighting games, and I know for a fact I will never buy this new game, but I’m sure there will be some sort of game demo for it and I will play that for 30 minutes and call it good.

Eternights is a runner-up for my most interesting games out of this event. It’s definitely not the type of game I would normally gravitate to, but the combat looks rad, and the anime style is interesting. I wanna know why the dude lost his arm and now has a glowing appendage that shape shifts. I also didn’t realize it has dating sim elements in it, but I guess that’s an evolution for the genre maybe? Like I said, not my type of game, but something about it has me intrigued I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on it moving forward, but the release window is in early 2023, so there is a solid chance that I forget about it altogether.

Now that we got those out of the way, let’s dig into the games I am looking forward to!

Final Fantasy 16 looks super fun. I really like the style of it, the combat looks super fun, and it’s a brand new entry and not a remake! The game was announced to be coming in 2023, but let’s be real here. Expect it to be showing up in 2024. Final Fantasy has a reputation for getting delayed numerous times. The medieval aspect of it looks excellent and having the combat style from the FF7 Remake has me more on board. Never been much of a turn-based lover, to be honest. Final Fantasy has always been a franchise I have been drawn to but never played most of them. FF 12 is still one of my favorite entries, mainly because it’s the only one I played a ton of. The FF7 Remake was cool and all, but I fell off of it pretty hard. We still have no idea when Part 2 is coming out or if there’s a Part 3 or 4, or more. I have zero desire to wait on those to complete that story. If anything, it made me want to go back and play the original instead. All in all, I think FF 16 will be a solid entry to the franchise.

Stray is looking to be a super fun game. I like the idea of being a cat and running around some futuristic android city. I still have no real idea what you’re supposed to be doing in the game, but being a cute cat courier or something is right up my alley. It’s not a big open-world style game like I think some people might have thought it was going to be, but I’m alright with that. Reminds me more of an Inside or Limbo, but in a 3D space. Superlinear, but maybe some side bits? I’m not sure, but I’m into it so far. Comes out on PS4-5 and PC on July 19th.

The Callisto Protocol is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated games of the year. This game is made by Dead Space alums, and I am super into that franchise. I still haven’t played the third entry, but it is on my hard drive ready to go whenever I build up enough confidence to press play. This game looks scary as fuck, which doesn’t make me want to play it, but it gives off some amazing Dead Space 2 vibes and I loved playing that. I’m a little worried about the gameplay, to be honest. As long as the melee fighting doesn’t feel like The Surge, I’ll be on board. The game is slated to release on December 2nd of this year, but I honestly doubt it. Expect a Spring 2023 release for this game.
