Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – First Impressions

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a huge Star Wars fan. I enjoy the movies for what they are, but I’ve never read any of the expanded universe stuff or done any sort of deep dives on the subject. I like Star Wars, but I don’t go out of my way for it. Until now.

I got to play Respawn’s newest game Jedi: Fallen Order a little early and it is fantastic so far. I’m not super deep into the game as of right now, but the previews they showed off really don’t do the game any justice.

You play as Cal, a Jedi padewan who survived Order 66, the almost annihilation of all Jedis after the Clone Wars. He went into hiding, becoming a salvager on some dreary planet. That’s all stuff you learn right away at the start of the game. It’s pretty refreshing to have the character already know what he is instead of someone who just discovers randomly that they’re special.

The combat is comparable to Dark Souls. You will probably hear this a lot, but it’s true. You have the lock on system, dodging, rolling, but the attacks are on the face buttons. There’s a lot of perfect timing stuff, avoiding unblock-able attacks, and those hard boss fights.

Combat is very fun, but tough at the same time. Using your lightsaber to cut through monsters and Storm Troops is rad as hell. Parrying, like in all games that have the feature, is difficult for me. It’s extremely satisfying when I get the hang of it though. Also blocking lasers and sending them back at the shooter is incredibly fun.

The world is very Metroidvania-like. So I guess that means it takes a lot from Dark Souls, too. Everything is connected. You’ll find unlock-able shortcuts, hidden alcoves, and back tracking after getting new abilities to progress further. They are even Jedi meditation spots that act exactly like bonfires. You can restore your health, but all the enemies will respawn. This is also where you will level up with skill points.

So far from what I have seen the skills are pretty simple. New attack options with the light saber, more health, more force. I can’t wait to unlock more abilities though. I doubt there’s an evil skill tree at all, but I would love to see some force choking or lightening.

The people comparing it to Uncharted as well are definitely not wrong. There are big set pieces, and the beginning even has a portion that feels like it’s inspired by Uncharted 2’s train scene. There are lots of ledge grabbing and climbing up things. Wall running feels like it’s from Titanfall, which since it is Respawn I think that’s a good thing.

Fallen Order controls really well and looks really pretty. I don’t feel like a hard core badass yet, and I think that really works for the game so far. Little swamp rats and Storm Troops can still get hits on me, so I know I’m not a master yet. I can’t wait to spend more time within this world.

Are you planning on getting Fallen Order? Do you have any questions for me? Let me know!
