Backlog Adventures – Dead Space is Fucking Terrifying

Scary games and I have never mixed. Even Fallout 3’s underground areas had me spooked quite a bit. Because of this, there are many games that I missed out on, especially in the 360/PS3 era. The biggest horror game I skipped was the Dead Space franchise. Now that I am older, looks like it’s time to put my big boy pants on and dive into the series; no looking back!

Starting off, the game is incredibly tense. You’re just a mechanic, basically going to fix some dead ship. Bad things happen and now you’re taking on crazy creepy space aliens: Necromorphs (I believe they are called) but I don’t think they call them that in the game as of right now.

The areas within this dead ship are all so narrow. So many hallways hide these necromorph little shits, ready to pounce out of a vent and make me jump outta my shorts.

The atmosphere of Dead Space is exactly what you want from a horror game. Everything is dark; no where is safe and the slow introduction of new alien types mixes up the gameplay enough to make sure you’re never bored and always uneasy.

There has only been one part out of the entire game that I straight up just wanted to quit and not play anymore. For some reason the developers wanted to implement a shitty asteroid shooting mini game. It is so beyond out of place, horribly executed, and just not good at all. I was able to finally beat it (barely) and move on to the next chapter. I’m hoping this sort of thing does not pop up again.

The guns are great and diverse. The killing mechanics are definitely a new take too. Shoot off the limbs or just set them on fire a bit as that usually does the trick too. Finding audio and video recordings really helps flesh out more of what happened to this mining ship, why everybody is dead, and where the hell these creepy necromorph aliens came from!

I am currently as far as chapter 5 now, and looking online there are 12 chapters total. I know this is a game I will end up beating. It is a really great play and there seems to be a mystery unraveling right now. I am all about that.
