It’s that time of the year to start create my top 10 list for favorite games of 2018. I have played quite a few games this year, but honestly there are a bunch of games I either replayed or older games that I jumped into and fell pretty hard for. Not all of these games on this list will be brand new games that were released this year. Without in any specific order, these are my top games for this year!
1. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden had a pretty quiet launch. It kind of just slipped out onto Steam and Xbox One one day. The only reason I even got to play it was because it launched on Xbox Game Pass. This game does an excellent job at mashing together exploration, XCOM style turn based tactics, and an interesting world. You start off by playing as a anthropomorphic duck and boar, exploring a post apocalyptic world You are stalkers, keep your home The Ark alive by searching for scrap and other stuff. There is a stealth, to completely avoid battles if you want, or you can pick off enemies one by one, weakening them before taking an all out approach. There is a lot of save scumming to this game though to make sure you get things right. The game has been a lot of fun to play so far, but also a strong brain teaser trying to figure out the best approach in each new area.
2. Rainbow Six Siege
Rainbow 6 Siege never interested me until this year. I was looking for some type of competitive shooter and it just fit the mold pretty well. 2018 marks the end of season 3 for R6S and it introduced a bunch of fun new operators. My two favorites are Frost on defense and Dokkaebi on attack. The game is still going strong, but not without its issues. There are still some pretty shitty people playing this game and they are pretty vocal about it. I never use a mic so it doesn’t bother me as much, but I can see why it’s such a turn off to new player. They also ran into an issue with censoring the game because it was entering the Chinese market. Outside of these issue though the game is constantly getting updated with new maps and characters to keep it feeling fresh and enjoyable. I’m trash at the game still, but I can’t stop playing.
3. Watch_Dogs 2
You know you really like a game when you end up buying it twice on two different consoles to get the trophies/achievements for both. I originally played Watch_Dogs 2 on the PS4 when it launched and I absolutely loved it. It’s been two years since then and I decided that it was time to jump back into San Fran and play through the story again. I really love the world that Ubisoft created within WD2. The vibe and style this game exudes is just so much fun. The characters are hit or miss, but I enjoyed the story quite a bit. Even playing through multiplayer for the first time on the Xbox One has been enjoyable. The game is better than most other games I have played this year, hate it if you want, but it is still excellent.
4. Titanfall 2
Here’s another game that came out several years ago and I am still playing it. Also, another game I have bought on two separate systems to play through and essentially double dip on. I am currently playing on Xbox One X right now. I am playing through the single player campaign again, but the multiplayer is still hopping. I even wrote something 6 months ago how I was still playing this game and it continues to be one of the most viewed posts I have. When you want a relaxing but fast-paced shooter, this is the one. Also, do not sleep on that story! It’s the best FPS single player story in years!
5. Red Dead Redemption 2
There really isn’t too big of a surprise here. I have been waiting for this game to come out for a while now. Maybe not as long as other people out there, but Rock Star games are pretty legendary, and RDR2 is no slouch. Sure, I have some issues with it. It’s deliberately slow. There are sections of the game that very easily could have been cut down. The world seems so huge with not enough to want to really explore, for me anyways. That being said, the characters are excellent. The game is gorgeous. The story is intriguing. I am on chapter 4 and have had to take a break from it, so I won’t end up finishing this game in the year 2018, but so far it has easily been one of the better gaming experiences I have had in a while.
6. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
I have had such a wild ride with Odyssey so far. I have spent 50 hours in this game and I know I have another 50 to go. The world is too big, lets get that out of the way. It’s bloated with so much useless content that it absolutely forces you into playing. That being said, Kassandra is another amazing character in the series. She is so much fun to play as. I am sucked into the story pretty heavily right now. I miss how the older games in the series were, but I always end up enjoying an AC game, and Odyssey does a lot of stuff right that just makes me keep coming back for more.
7. The Division
Sheesh, I can already hear you know. I know this game is pretty old, but I jump onto this game constantly each month to run through the amazing world that is the decimated New York City. Sure, enemies are bullet sponges, but most games that are MMO like on consoles have this flaw. The game has been updated constantly and with great content. The community is also incredibly helpful as well. I can’t help myself. I really enjoy exploring the snowy streets and finding new things still. The Dark Zone is still an incredibly scary place to run through, but finding that sweet, sweet loot is a grind I actually enjoy.
8. Marvel’s Spider-Man
RELATIONSHIPS! This is what really made this game for me. I absolutely loved the relationships between all the characters, the emotional story, and not to mention the amazing traversal Insomniac cooked up. Sure the combat is standard, but everything else about this game was amazing. Also, the map size was perfect. It’s an absolutely collect-athon in multiple ways, but this game does so many things so well that it’s an absolutely must for anyone who owns a PS4.
9. God of War
This list isn’t in any sort of order, but God of War is actually my #1 game of the year. Apparently it’s a lot of other people’s favorite game of 2018 as well, and for good reason. I was never a fan of the previous games. This new entry to the franchise though drew me in with its focus on storytelling and characters. It was an absolute wild ride, with the combat being top notch and the boss fights being epic. I genuinely can’t wait to playthrough this game again in 2019.
10. Divinity Original Sin 2
I have barely scratched the surface of Divinity Original Sin 2 and it made my top 10 list pretty easily. The creativity you have with this game is the closest you will ever get to playing a DnD game. A good one, anyways. The world is living and so much can go good or bad. It’s absolutely incredible what Larian Studios has done. Also, the premade characters with backstories are an absolute must play as. Make sure you can speak to animals.. it’s just too good.
So that’s it! Those are my top 10 favorite games I played in 2018. Sure, half of them weren’t released this year, but they still stood out to me. Any of these games on your top 10 games? What did you think of my list? Hate it? Oh well! Better luck next year!
